The number of abortions in Switzerland remained low until 2017 (10,037, compared with 10,255 in the previous year), despite continuing population growth. In 2018 it rose by 3% to 10,457, which is not significant, so it could also be a random fluctuation.

The abortion rate in Switzerland, at 6.4 per 1,000 women aged 15-44, is the lowest in all of Europe and possibly worldwide. In 2016 the rate was 6.3 percent, in 2017 it was 6.2 percent. The number of young people under the age of 20 is also very low: Only 3.3 per 1,000 young women under 20 had abortions in 2017 and 2018 (3.5 in 2016), and the proportion of young people under 16 fell below 1%.

The proportion of medical abortions is constant: 72% in 2016, 75% in 2017 and 74% in 2018. Abortions are still performed early: 95% in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy (calculated from the last period).
