After the surgical termination of pregnancy

After the surgical abortion, you should take a few precautions. A follow-up check with us or your gynecologist should be planned.

Pain

Usually you are painless after the operation. Occasionally a light pull will last for a few hours. Putting a warming bed bottle on your stomach often helps.

Bleeding

Normally the bleeding lasts 2-7 days after the surgical abortion, occasionally up to 2 weeks. You may bleed more frequently 2-3 days after the operation. After the 5th day the bleeding should decrease. A hormonal IUS can lead to smear bleeding in the first 1-2 months after insertion, which is normal.
You should not insert anything into the vagina for another 3 days after the end of the bleeding, as the cervix may still be a little open:

– Use only tampons instead of bandages.
– Take a shower and / or wash yourself externally. No full bath. No swimming pool visits. No sauna sessions.
– Avoid sexual intercourse with penetration of the male penis into your vagina.

Follow-up check

This is normally scheduled 1-2 weeks after the surgical abortion by us or your referring doctor. If we have inserted an IUD, a second follow-up is necessary 6 weeks after the operation.

If you want to take the contraceptive pill, start on the same day or the day after the surgical abortion.

Incapacity to work

You decide for yourself whether or not we should issue a work certificate for a few days. Some women need a few days’ rest for various reasons. Other women want to go back to work as soon as possible. A slight rise in temperature after the operation is not unusual. The first period comes after about 4-6 weeks. If you have some lactation, use a particularly firm bra or tie the breasts flat to the chest with a cloth. Do not squeeze or massage the milk as this will stimulate the milk flow. Sometimes camphor ointment also helps.
